This entry from Minute Book 2, a volume sometimes known as the Far West Record (see JS, Journal, Mar.−Sep., , 13 Apr. ), is a reminder of the crisis of leadership and faith endured by JS’s followers in the aftermath of the Mormon War. Mary Austin Holley (), a cousin of Stephen F. Austin, journeyed to Texas on three separate occasions. Her first visit, in , resulted in the publication of her book, Texas. Her second and third trips, in and , were depicted in her diary/5.
